Music + Students = Awesome! |
|
Welcome to Rock and Learn! This site and project have been designed to help educators realize the power of using music in the middle and high school classroom. This site also serves as a platform to learn about initiatives that West Hartford students are involved in. In a world where everyone seems to be plugged into their iPod no matter where they are, it is increasingly important to examine the role that music plays in our every-day lives. Throughout history music has been used to promote messages, and can be a powerful learning tool. Not only do students thrive using different methods of education, but they also can make much deeper connections through familiar mediums such as music. (It doesn’t hurt that the bands touring usually are closer in age to the students, and have pretty interesting jobs as rock stars!) MISSION: The aim of this project is to get bands that use music to promote social messages and themes into America’s middle and high schools to make connections with students and produce more responsible, thoughtful, connected, and concerned citizens. |

This organization and website were created by Steph Sperber, a teacher in West Hartford, CT. “Sperbs,” as she is known around town, uses music in her classroom to help students create a connection to historical time periods, as well as make connections to current events. She has brought bands such as State Radio and Among Criminals to speak to her students. Sperber also hosts a monthly show on WHC-TV and prides herself on being involved with West Hartford youth initiatives to make the world a better place.
